3 Keys To Stop Absorbing Negative Energy From Other People
Just the other week I woke up after a great sleep, I was filled with energy and was excited about the day. I began my early morning meditative practice, 5 keys in particular before I left out of the house.
Floating on a cloud of gratitude and appreciation for the day, I went about working on a small to-do list I had assembled earlier that morning. I made calls to some potential places about utilizing my speaking services, put together my next email campaign, sold a few books and wrote a great article for Three Key Life.
The day was flowing wonderfully as I left my small office space. I stopped by a local coffee shop to finish refining another project I was working on and then it happened, a friend of mine approached. Filled with negative energy from the lack of productivity in his own life, he spewed toxic thoughts across the table and into my mind.
Because my day was going so well, I tried to shine light into his experience but he was caught in a dense fog. No matter what I said, he one-upped me with a negative idea.
I listened and nodded my head as he continued to dig a pit of despair. Forty-five minutes later I kindly dismissed myself and had to leave him in his tazmanian devil whirlwind of negativity.
This is just one of the countless times I’ve been bombarded with negative energy from another person and it got me thinking about what the best ways are to avoid absorbing negative energy from others?
Standing Guard at the Doorway of your Mind
One thing I know about absorbing negative energy from others is it can quickly dampen the good things happening in your life. If we are unwilling to be the watchguard of our mind, other people’s problems can become ours and their pain can remind us of our own unresolved issues.
One of the most freeing things we have in this life is the ability to choose one thought over another. This is much easier said than done. Often we don’t even recognize the thoughts we are allowing to flow through our mind.
If we venture into a toxic environment and leave the doorway of our mind open without a guard at the front entrance, other people’s issues and negativity can storm our inner temple and trample the goodness many of us so desperately crave.
This negativity can come from a friend, family member or co-worker, but often this negativity arises from things like depressing videos on the internet, people’s negative rants on social feeds and drama-filled TV shows that can pull the peace right out from within you.
The solution to this is to stand guard at the entrance of your conscious mind and be aware of when you are absorbing negative energy from people, shows, and things.
Pull People Into Your Peace
The more you stand guard in your mind, aware of the thoughts you give power to, the easier it becomes to shine a light of peace into the lives of those who are facing challenges.
The more you recognize the endless spring of peace that can be found within, the more you can share that peace with those stuck in despair.
From this state of mind you no longer allow people to pull you into their storms but you pull them into your peace. This is what I realized when my buddy brought his burdens to my doorstep. I understood that I can support him but I will not allow myself to soak up his drama.
I am not a sponge for negativity and neither are you.
3 Keys To Stop Absorbing Negative Energy From Other People
#1 – Be Around Positive People – If you are around people filled with worry, doubt, fear and a consistent stream of negativity, it gets difficult to create a positive refuge within yourself. While we’re not always able to be around positive people, we can choose the areas where we spend most of our time. Spend time in positive places, around positive people who build you up, not those who break you down. If you don’t know where to begin or don’t believe you have these people around you, venture into nature and simply be.
#2 – You Can’t Please Everyone – When people come banging on your door to dump their negativity upon you, remember, you can’t please everyone. You can be a listening ear but may not have the exact solution to save them, to empower them or even to help them at all. However, you can always do your part to remain in a positive state and be your best; after all, you are the only person you can control. Don’t allow another individual who seems unsavable to drown you in their problems.
#3 – Create a Refuge of Peace – One of the best things we can do to prevent the absorption of negative energy from the world is to build and develop a spiritual practice. These are 5 Key Ways we can maximize our day. A few of these things include breathing deeply, meditating, reading positive things and remaining in a peaceful mental state. The more positivity you find within, the less negativity others can deposit in you.
