The Importance of a Stranger
Whether you are a business owner, an aspiring entrepreneur, an artist, author, speaker, founder of a non-profit, or community leader, strangers are key for the survival and expansion of your endeavors.
People whom you’ve never met are the individuals who are going to buy your product, hear you speak, read your book, donate to your cause and purchase the art you create.
Most people, however, have a fear about contacting strangers to share their gifts, business and expression.
This fear of strangers is common for many people because most of us have been taught since youth not to speak with people we don’t know. We are taught from a young age not to ask people for too much, not to irritate others and not to come off as aggressive. If you look around our planet at many of the successful individuals, you’ll see they were willing to breakdown the barriers of fear and do everything within their power to share their gifts with the world, which typically meant meeting new people.
Have you realized the importance of a stranger in the development of your dreams?
Are you fearful to pick up the phone and make 30 cold calls to potential clients whom you’ve never met for the advancement of your business?
Are you willing to enter into organizations and share the mission of your community project?
The majority of all business transactions, speaking opportunities and donations come from someone who was first a stranger.
With rapport, a good heart, having the best interest of the other person in mind and believing that you are adding to our planet in a positive way, a stranger can suddenly become one of your biggest supporters and fans.
The Power of a Stranger
For myself, this past year has been filled with recognizing the power of a stranger. Sure, when I was young my mom told me not to accept candy from anyone I didn’t know, not get in the car with a stranger, and to be aware of mysterious people at the playground, but what she didn’t tell me was how important strangers are to the attainment of my goals.
In 2015, I began my speaking business. I had a goal to speak 52 times throughout the year. I knew some people who could provide me with opportunities but I didn’t know 52 people who had 52 different speaking opportunities. This meant that I had to reach out to people whom I’ve never met.
In March of 2015 I started picking up the phone and calling places to see if I could speak to their organizations. I made over 500 cold calls throughout 2015, and of those phone calls to people I’ve never met landed me 48 different speaking opportunities that year. This momentum has continued into 2016 and I’ve been speaking nearly 2 times a week thus far.
I share this with you to bring your attention to the importance of continuously reaching out to people who can support you on your path to your dreams.
While not every person supported my mission and provided me with a chance to speak, I got to know new people, befriended others and have aligned with them to create potential opportunities in the future.
Whatever your dreams may be, whether you are in business or the non-profit world, I encourage you to talk to as many strangers as possible. Be willing to make phone calls, be willing to face your fears, rise above rejection and share your gifts and mission with others.
It only takes a handful of people to completely change your life. Imagine if you met 3 new people each day who believed in your endeavors, what would your life start to look like?
3 Keys To Meeting Strangers Who Will Propel Your Dreams
#1 – Clarify Your Why – Why do you do what you do? Why are you drawn towards the dreams that fill your mind? As you clarify your why, you’ll see for most of us, the reason we do what we do is to not only help ourselves blossom into our highest and best but to help other people blossom as well. By being clear on your why you will be willing to contact new people to share your mission, speak with strangers about how you can assist them and walk through the fear of rejection.
#2 – Importance of Communication – Communication is the water that helps dreams and goals grow into reality. Be willing to communicate with others, be willing to share your vision, enter new environments and put yourself in places where your dreams can excel. Be willing to talk with others whom you’ve never met and gain support by keeping their best interest in mind. You won’t get booked as a speaker if you don’t communicate with the booking manager. You won’t sell books if you don’t communicate with the potential readers. You can’t sell your product if you’re not communicating with the demographic of people who wear what you’re selling. Communication is key, and not just verbal, but spirit to spirit communication too. (Positive Vibes and Compassionate Energy)
#3 – Free Yourself of Your Fears – Why would you be scared to speak to another person or group of people if you knew what you were doing would help them be their best? Free yourself from being scared of strangers, rise above the barriers you’ve carried with you since a child, push through rejection, believe in yourself and know that your gifts are important, your dreams unique and that your life has great value. Don’t allow doubts to steal your power and prevent you from meeting someone whose life could become better because of what you have to offer them.
Mission of the Week
This week, meet new people. This week, make the necessary calls to people who can advance your dreams forward.
Remember, there are people who you’ve never met, people who have money in their pocket that they want to share with you, but first you must let them know who you are and what you have to offer.
Closed mouths don’t get fed and the people around you can only take you so high. This is where the importance of a stranger comes in.
