Walk Into Any Room and Gain Attention
This past week I was invited to be a part of the Center for Spiritual Living Convention that took place in my hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah. The past 14 months have been filled with the opportunity to visit a variety of spiritual communities across America and share my expression, conduct workshops and share my book.
I was grateful to be invited by David Ault, the Senior Minister of the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta and to be a part of the “Emerging Leaders” portion of the convention.
Walking into the large conference center, I was amazed at how many people were there, the powerful music and how many people I didn’t know.
The first evening of the convention I was given a few minutes to share with the attendees my message about the young adult community we have built in Atlanta called Kinetic Ascent. I spent the afternoon before my brief evening message shaking hands, meeting new people, speaking with leaders in the movement and introducing myself to a lot of people, the vast majority of which I didn’t know. I did this so that when I spoke they’d at least have some idea who I was.
Following the few minutes I had to speak, which went exceptionally well, a lady by the name of Lola Wright approached the microphone from the Bodhi Spiritual Center of Chicago. Her words were centered around the need for diversity on the panel of individuals discussing the emerging leaders of the movement. Her words prompted the panel to invite me and another young adult, Dana Robinson, onto the stage to field questions.
This wasn’t planned and I didn’t even think it would be possible. I soon found myself on the stage answering questions from the conference attendees about the young, emerging leaders of the spiritual movement.
This is what I call an extreme icebreaker. Following the panel that evening it was as if I knew everyone in the convention. For the next two days I collected business cards, exchanged phone numbers with various spiritual communities across our globe, shared my marketing materials and by the end of the convention felt like I was right at home.
This experience reminded me of the importance of believing in yourself in such a way that you are willing to enter into any community, any event, any room and command positive attention. This is the attention necessary to propel your dreams forward and empowers you to blossom into your highest and best.
Give, Give, Give
Whether you are in business, a part of a spiritual organization, in a social justice movement, building your personal brand, or hoping to gain attention for something near to your heart, it is all about moving into every environment with a heart of service.
There have been times in the past where I have entered new environments with a take mentality. I wanted to get business opportunities, get people to support my endeavors, get people to book me to speak, but I wasn’t thinking about what I could give.
When you set your mind to being of service instead of looking at what others can give you, you are in a position to be well received, remembered and provided with potential opportunities.
As many say, give and more shall be given. Take and that which you have will be took. Look around on this planet we walk upon, look deeply at nature and recognize the endless flow of giving which allows life to continue to unfold in beautiful and abundant ways.
For those of you seeking to expand your business, reach your goals and live your dreams, below you’ll find a few keys you can embrace to help you walk into any room and gain attention.
3 Keys to Walk Into Any Room and Gain Attention
#1 – Heart of Service – Before you enter any event, community gathering, business meeting or conference, ask yourself, “how can I support the people that are here?” Ask this in a peaceful and conscious way, realizing that you are placed in certain situations and environments to help others blossom into their best. A heart of service is centered around giving the best of you. Moving with this heart of service will help you find and align with people who can support you as you move toward your purpose.
#2 – It’s Not About You – Instead of speaking to people with the intention of getting them to help you maximize your results, shape your conversations so you are more interested in what they are doing than you are in how they can help you. By being genuinely interested in others and their mission, you build instant rapport and can look for win-win scenarios that can help everyone involved soar higher. Remember, basically all people believe they are the most important person in the world. Cater to them by realizing it is not about you, but about using your energy to help others. Moving with this awareness, you’ll be surprised how many people begin to support your endeavors.
#3 – Keep It Moving – When you find yourself in a convention, a meeting or a gathering where you hope to meet individuals, do your best to talk with everyone. If someone aligns with your words and what you are doing, jot down their information, snag a card or exchange a handshake and continue moving through the crowd. On the flip side, if someone totally disregards you, smile, thank them for their time and keep it moving. By doing this you’ll not only meet the maximum number of people, but can find the people who you can engage on a deeper level with as time moves on.
Importance of a Stranger
If you are in business, are a speaker, author, church member, or looking to further your cause, you must meet as many strangers as possible.
It is a stranger who is looking for your product, a stranger who is looking to attend your church, a stranger who is searching for their next speaker at their convention and a stranger who has been hunting for a book you’ve written.
You must let them know you exist. Sow seeds of compassion, kindness, and genuine interest in them and allow those seeds to blossom into opportunities that support both of you.
